1 Classifying European Institutions for higher education
(stage II)
The CEIHE II project is a follow up of the CEIHE project. Started in
September 2006, the project was finalised in May 2008. The project is run
by an international project team, lead by prof. dr. Frans van Vught. The
project team benefits from the advice of an advisory board, in which large
number of (associations of) higher education institution participate, and
of a stakeholder group, comprising stakeholders and interest groups.
The results of the second phase of this project were disseminated during
the Berlin conference of 10/11 July. You will find more information on
this conference, including all the presentations, on the website.

2 US 2006 Physics Academic Workforce survey
The Statistical Research Center (SRC) of the American Institute of Physics
(AIP) has recently posted data on its web site from the 2006 Academic
Workforce survey. These data focus on three areas:
a) the overall picture of the number of faculty members in physics and
astronomy departments, including a description of the relationship
between number of faculty members and number of bachelor’s degrees
awarded;
b) the representation of women among physics and astronomy faculty,
including the representation of women among newly hired assistant
professors; and
c) changes in the physics academic workforce since 1998, including the
relationship between retirements and the number of faculty members
recruited by physics departments.

1'Trends in Quality Assurance' Corvinus University, Budapest (HU) 2008-11-20/22
The 3rd European Quality Assurance Forum will explore European and international trends in quality assurance. It will examine the implications of these developments for quality assurance in European higher education and internationally and ask, specifically, if these developments increase quality levels in higher education.
Following the success of the first two European Quality Assurance fora (respectively, at the Technische Universität München and at La Sapienza Universita di Roma), the third forum, co-organised by ENQA, ESU, EUA and EURASHE and supported by the Lifelong Learning Programme of the European Commission, is hosted by Corvinus University

2 'Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area: Methods and Effects' Beethovenhalle, Bonn (DE) 2008-11-03/04
Thanks to a special grant from the German federal Ministry of Education and Research the Quality Management Project is in the position to organise the traditional 'Autumn Conference' once again. This year’s conference will deal with questions linked to the outcomes of Quality Assurance methods in terms of leadership and management. Furthermore, the question of how they can be useful in the equilibrium of university autonomy and public/state responsibility for Higher Education is going to be discussed. On the first day, different national systems of quality assurance and enhancement will be presented. The second day will deal with issues relating to the intended and unintended effects and outcomes of quality assurance and enhancement within the institutions. The closing of the conference will be done with a panel debate, discussing how the German system fits into the European and global frameworks and how the balance of autonomy and public responsibility can be kept in equilibrium.

Students, Staff and Academic Mobility in Higher Education'
Mike Byram and Fred Dervin (eds.)
Cambridge Scholars Press, 2008
ISBN 9781847186034
The effects are on host universities, on the university community of staff and students, on the ways in which staff and students understand the nature of university study, on the ways students may or may not integrate with a local community. By experiencing something different - for institutions, an influx of students with different ideas about academic study, for students an interaction with ‘locals’ and with other ‘internationals’, for staff a challenge to their assumptions about teaching and learning - all see themselves in a new light and are often forced to change. This book charts the changes which are happening now and will undoubtedly continue for the foreseeable future. It therefore offers all involved a reflection on their own experience and practice and the means of improving them.

ECHANGES ET MOBILITÉS ACADÉMIQUES - Quel bilan ?'
Fred Dervin et Michael Byram (éds.)
l'Harmattan,
Paris 2008
288 p.
ISBN 978-2-296-06149-1
